GHK Rugby club Burns Afternoon Sunday 27th Jan

by

We performed at the GHK Rugby Club Burns Afternoon held in the School Hall at Glasgow High School on Sunday. It was quite a formal event where we played to an audience of about 200. We started playing some of our usual tunes as guests assembled which was appreciated with ripples of applause from those assembled. In the end, with 200 gathered, it was difficult to be heard above the chat even with 9 of us. ‘the night drave on wi sangs and clatter’.

We performed two sets to a receptive and welcoming audience, however i think we were a little nervy in our playing. It can be quite daunting when silence falls for the performance. ‘Use mair bow’ as Dougie Lawrence would say!! . Once we got going, we delivered a nice sound and some good strong playing. There we the usuals toasts and great renditions of Holy Willies prayer and Tam o Shanter. Judging by the enthusiastic thanks from many of my fellow club members, Scratchy had gone down very well indeed. Many thanks to all who took part.

I really enjoyed the day, I thought everyone did exceptionally well especially as we were on Stage very much on Display. Well done to Francis for fronting up and offering to do an intro for the Guitars.

Thanks for a nice day Craig . Definitely nerve wracking for the performance . Rabble might have described my bowing as “wee scratchy cowrin timrous strokes” , but overall we did well under pressure .

Very enjoyable, lovely meal and company , and great Burns recitations. Quite an experience for Scratchy to play on a stage in front of so many people but think we all did well and held it together. Thanks to Craig for excellent organisation.

Forgot to add that it was nice of Craig to deny there were musicians in the audience – met the music teacher later in the bar – she was very diplomatic.
